LCR-50 / LCR-50 HSE  HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER CHANNEL SPEAKER

The LCR-50 is a high technology speaker from Von Schweikert Audio, a leader in audiophile loudspeaker engineering. This speaker may be used as either a full range speaker system in a conventional stereo music setup when shelf mounting is desired, or as a dedicated dialogue speaker in a Home Theater application. The horizontal mounting position enables the speaker to be placed on top of a large projection TV monitor or beneath the screen in a two piece projection system.  Since it is unshielded, it must be placed at least two feet from a conventional television set.

VOCAL INTELLIGIBILITY= EXTREME ENGINEERING
To achieve the state-of-the-art in vocal intelligibility and full range response, the LCR-50 goes beyond other center channel speakers in the following areas: 1) Bass response down to 30Hz was required and results in a large enclosure using twin 7" aluminum coned woofers and a specialized "aperiodic" loading technique, and 2) Vocal intelligibility had to surpass electrostatic drivers, which required a very high level of specialized engineering to succeed. To faithfully reproduce the midrange frequency band within the critical vocal range of 100Hz to 2,000Hz, a very light cone combined with a very high driving force and control is required. Remember, when the midrange driver is reproducing a voice signal of 2kHz, the speaker is moving 2,000 cycles per second! In order for the cone to move this quickly without adding distortion or transient lag, we have engineered an extremely light but rigid diaphragm  made from paper, carbon powder, and Kevlar threads, named Aerogel. Although this cone is very rigid, it does not ring due to the high degree of internal damping afforded by the composite of materials. The resulting combination of these design choices enable our Aerogel midrange driver to have the same level of clarity as an unbaffled electrostatic driver but with higher dynamic range and power handling. No other midrange driver comes close!

CABINET DESIGN FOR EXTREME CLARITY
To eliminate cabinet resonances that color the voices on competing speakers, we used 2" thick MDF in the front baffle and a combination of 1" MDF and 1" acoustic foam on the other cabinet walls. In addition, there is substantial bracing inside the enclosure to reduce the resonance from the twin 7" woofers. Clearly, the 78 lb weight of the LCR-50 is a sign of our high degree of interest in achieving the state-of-the-art clarity level from a dialog speaker! The midrange enclosure uses our Gradient Density stuffing technique, completely eliminating common cavity resonance problems which adds the typical "boxy" sonic signature to competing cone systems.

EXTREME TWEETER DESIGN
High frequency distortion at high volume levels compromises the clarity and listenability of almost all center channel speakers extant, and to eliminate this common problem, we engineered a tweeter with a very highly damped silk dome using four layers of rubber coating. To drive this distortion-free dome to high volume levels, we employed an expensive voice coil using silver wire and a double magnet structure with precision manufacturing techniques. To further reduce distortion, we use a special grade of magnetic oil called Ferrofluid, which both cools the voice coil and also reduces mechanical distortion caused by the voice coil "rocking" in the top-plate gap (chatter distortion). The result is very sweet musicality and accuracy even at thundering volume levels!

LCR-50  SPECIFICATIONS:

System Type: Unshielded three-way phase-consistent full-range left, center, or right video speaker system, optimized for Vocal Intelligibility and high power handling at high volume levels.
Frequency Response: Baffled mounting (in wall unit or close to rear wall: 28Hz-25kHz -6dB / free air, 39Hz-20kHz +/- 1.5dB).
Impedance: 8 Ohms nominal, 5 Ohms min.
Mounting: Can be mounted horizontally or vertically, with tweeters mirror imaged inboard when placed vertically. Can also be mounted inside equipment cabinet but will require additional stuffing: please call factory for further information.  Since this unit is unshielded, it must be at least two feet from a CRT.
Bass Loading: Pressure release system with 100% acoustic fill (aperiodic loading) eliminates boom and resonance to provide extreme vocal intelligibility. Cabinet is a triple chambered cabinet made from 1" MDF (2" thick front baffle) with 1" acoustic foam/felt lining. Additional stuffing may be installed to reduce bass response if needed.
Bass Drivers: 2pc -- 7" cast frame Low Distortion aluminum-coned woofers with phase plug, long throw design, high temperature voice coils, Low Distortion Motor, and butyl rubber surrounds. These woofers are designed to have extremely clean bass at high volumns.
Midrange Driver: 1pc -- 5.5" cast frame Low Distortion midrange driver with Aerogel composite cone, rubber surround, phase plug, long throw design, and edge-wound ribbon voice coil. This unit has the fastest transient response accuracy of any we have tested.
Tweeter: 1pc --1" silk dome with Sonotex coating, Ferrofluid cooling and Low Distortion motor.
Driver Configuration: Woofers outboard, with vertically oriented mid/tweeter array. The mid/tweeter orientation allows wide dispersion for listeners off the central axis.
Crossover: 24dB/octave acoustic slopes using Global Axis Integration Network design, with 300Hz and 3kHz crossover points. Solen polypropylene caps, air core inductors, Analysis Plus wire and gold plated Cardas binding posts offer maximum clarity.
Sensitivity: 90dB @ one watt/one meter measured in room with boundary gain.
Power Handing: 30 watts min., 200 watts input power, 300 watts peak on vocal material.
Warranty: Ten years parts and labor, excluding abuse.
Weight: 78 lbs., 94 lbs. in carton.
Dimensions: 30" Wide x 16" Deep x 11.5" High (horizontally placed).
